We’re Recruiting A Fundraising Trustee

About Kiota

Kiota aspires for a world in which women, children and young people can determine their futures, free from harm and exploitation.

We are a small-but-brave charity, working in partnership with KIWOHEDE, an established and respected Tanzanian NGO. Our holistic approach to poverty reduction focuses on the education, rights, health and development of young people, with a particular emphasis on girls. We are a UK-based volunteer-led charity with minimal costs in the UK, and pride ourselves on developing a collaborative, responsive and empowering approach to international development. We place a high value on the autonomy of our beneficiaries, and this manifests in us supporting them to develop their own solutions to the challenges they face.

Responsibilities as a trustee

Kiota trustees are responsible for controlling the charity's management and administration. They are responsible for ensuring that our income is used for the purposes set out in the charity's governing document and for no other purpose. Trustees have a responsibility to act reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to the charity, and have a responsibility to act in the best interests of the charity.

There are six key duties of trusteeship:

  1. Ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit

  2. Comply with your charity’s governing document and the law

  3. Act in your charity’s best interest

  4. Manage your charity’s resources responsibly

  5. Act with reasonable care and skill

  6. Ensure your charity is accountable.

Being a trustee of a small charity can be incredibly rewarding. It is different to being a trustee of a large organisation, as the trustees are responsible for the operational work of the charity as well as the governance and strategy. To ensure that trusteeships work for Kiota and for our trustees, we will review new trusteeships after six months to ensure that all are happy with arrangements and that there is a good “fit”.

Role Purpose

We are looking to appoint a trustee with experience in community and event fundraising to lead on improving our reach with individual supporters and contribute to the development of our fundraising strategy. Working alongside existing trustees, this role will be pivotal to ensuring Kiota maximises fundraising opportunities with existing supporters and builds a community of committed supporters.

Key tasks will include:

  • Collaborate with Kiota’s Communication & Marketing Trustee and Philanthropy Trustee to develop a multi-faceted approach to growth, engagement and reach.

  • Develop a variety of Kiota-specific activities that our supporters can utilise to raise funds and our profile.

  • To scope, pilot and establish work with universities and schools to grow support for Kiota amongst young fundraisers.

  • Experience of raising funds for a small international development charity.

  • Experience of working within the charity, voluntary and public sector.

Time Commitment

The board has four strategic meetings each year which are three hours each, we also have four shorter decision focused meetings each year of up to an hour and a half.

The board is an operational one, and the trustees act as the main staff of the charity on a voluntary basis as well as being trustees on the board. Please be aware that all trustees will be expected to take on functional roles including being active in fundraising activities. We anticipate this will take a minimum of 8 hours per month.

We are committed to refreshing our Kiota family so that it better reflects our audience. Kiota believes that a more diverse board can bring a wider set of life experiences to bear, avoid groupthink and strengthen our governance. We would particularly welcome applications from people with East African heritage and are committed to creating a working environment that is supportive and safe for all.
